Overview of the Bluebird Monitoring Project
Pocahontas State Park has 50 nest boxes and about 200 chicks are fledged each year. Boxes need to be monitored weekly during nesting season, which runs April 1 - Labor Day. We also do some trail maintenance in the off season. Monitoring means visiting each nest box and recording observations such as nest development, egg counts, chick counts, chick approximate age, and approximate fledge date. Monitoring nest boxes greatly increases nesting success, gives volunteers an opportunity to see the complete life cycle, gives volunteers a nice walk in the park, and is endlessly fascinating.
